Thousands sing anthem, break world record



LAHORE: Tousands of Pakistanis on Saturday evening sang the national anthem here to break the world record for the most people singing a national anthem simultaneously.

The Guinness World Record officials, as reported by TV channels, said 42,813 Pakistanis sang the anthem.

They had gathered at the National Hockey Stadium and the event was held under the aegis of the ongoing Punjab Youth Festival 2012 amid the presence of officials of the Guinness World Record. Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif also witnessed the event. According to organisers, Pakistan has made it to the Guinness World Records for the most people singing a national anthem simultaneously but the official decision of the jury is pending.

The participants in the event had arrived at the stadium earlier and during the day practised the national anthem for several hours. The attempt was part of the opening of the Punjab Youth Festival’s main round. Addressing the ceremony, Shahbaz Sharif said it was an event for Pakistan, and not just for Punjab. He also sang the famous song “Akaylay na Jana” and said the youth assembled in thousands proved that they had the the ability to make the plunderers run away.
